Citibank Handlowy-Funded Professor Aleksander Gieysztor Award Presented to Professor Tomaszewski

Professor Andrzej Tomaszewski wins 11th Professor Aleksander Gieysztor Award, granted by Citibank Handlowy's Leopold Kronenberg Foundation for outstanding contribution to the preservation of Polish cultural heritage.

Professor Andrzej Tomaszewski was honored with the Professor Aleksander Gieysztor Award for his numerous achievements and in particular for his personal commitment to building Polish and German cooperation with a view to protect common cultural heritage. Andrzej Tomaszewski has been nominated to Professor in the History of Architecture and Preservation of Monuments. For many years, he conducted research with the History of Medieval Architecture, the History of Culture and the Theory and History of Cultural Heritage Preservation.


Professor Andrzej Tomaszewski also acted as a General Conservator of the Monuments of the Republic of Poland and Polish representative in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Committee and the European Council Heritage Committee. At present, he chairs the Council of Cultural Heritage Preservation maintained by the President of the Capital City of Warsaw and acts as a President of Polish and German Foundation for Cultural Heritage Preservation. He also serves as a Co-Chairman of the Working Group of Polish and German Art Historians and Conservators. This year's winner of the Professor Aleksander Gieysztor Award is an author of more than 230 publications in Poland and abroad.

Previous winners of the Professor Aleksander Gieysztor Award were: Professor Jan. K. Ostrowski, Director of Wawel Royal Castle, Ossolineum, the Public Committee for the Protection of the Stare Powazki Cemetery, Professor Tadeusz Chrzanowski - Chairman of the Public Committee for the Restoration of Kraków Monuments, Stefan Sutkowski - Director of the Warsaw Chamber Opera, the Society for the Protection of Monuments, Professor Stanislaw Waltos - Director of the Museum of the Jagiellonian University, and Professor Kazimierz Piotr Zaleski -Director of the Polish Library in Paris.

The Professor Aleksander Gieysztor Award has been granted by the Kronenberg Foundation, maintained by Citi Handlowy continuously since 2000. The Award was named in honor of the former President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, member of the Council of the Leopold Kronenberg Foundation, and an outstanding Polish humanist of international distinction.

The Award, which amounts to PLN 50,000, is granted for special achievements in the following fields: activities related to the work of museums, archives and libraries as well as the conservation of monuments; the preservation and protection of Polish cultural heritage abroad; local government projects aiming to protect cultural heritage; individual and collective initiatives aiming to collect and protect the traces and remnants of cultural heritage; disseminating knowledge about the need and methods for protecting cultural heritage in Poland.
